This filter will probably make the water safe. However, if the filter is defective, bad bugs will get through. If the particular bad bug is smaller, say a small virus, it will get through. Also, if the dead animal died because of poison in the water, the filter might not trap that. All in All, I think you should bring lots of water with you. Just to be safe.

Boiling is another good option. But it won't help if the water is poisoned.

Sure, but I would strain the water through a shirt or coffee filter before running it through the Mini... just to get all the bigger particles out first. This will take out "bugs" and bacteria, but not all viruses. If you want to remove those you would still need iodine or chlorine treatments.

This filter will work fine, as others have stated I would use a Pre-filter (bandanna, coffee filter or similar) to keep the big stuff out. The filter comes with a syringe to back-flush the filter if it becomes clogged, which is why it will last so long. Disregard any comment regarding viruses. These are not an issue in North American waterways. More of a third world issue.

you can splice it in the middle of your drink tube or remove your bite valve and place the filkter in its place but either way you better test it before you count on it as i purchased one and no water would come thru it

Remove VOCs (volatile organic chemicals) by boiling water 1 minute; COOL IT; filter it.

It will do 100,000 gallons - provided you use a pre-filter. It can be back flushed to clean out the debris too.
