Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System [How to Use it]

Are you planning a hiking or backpacking trip where you may need to get your drinking water from streams or lakes? Take the 100,000 gallon Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System. It fits in the palm of your hand!

Mini Water Filter that You Can Attach to Your Hydration Backpack Bladder

How to Use the Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System:

As shown above, you can attach it inline to the hydration bladder in your tactical backpack. You don’t need a special adapter for this gadget to work. Simply hook it up and use it because hose adapters are built into the filter itself.

Alternatively, you can connect the portable filter to a straw or water pouch (both included with the filter). In addition, the design allows you to screw the filter onto most standard water bottles.

This versatile, company and convenient water filter works virtually anywhere and for multiple purposes. You don’t have to have a Camelbak, (nor do you even have to go camping either for that matter).

Sawyer Mini Water Filter Comes with Attachable Drinking Straw and Portable Water Pouch

In fact, many people use these mini water filters for emergency preparedness. Keep them at home in case of an emergency if you can’t access clean drinking water.

Sawyer Mini Water Filtration SystemPlus, you can take these small devices with you when you travel internationally to ensure you don’t get sick from water contaminated with harmful bacteria.

How Well Does this Small, Portable Filter Really Work?

The Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System may fit in the palm of your hand. However, it possesses the highest level for filtration.

(In fact, it significantly exceeds EPA guidelines.) Specifically, it removes 99.99999% of all bacteria and protozoa.

“Each filter is certified for absolute microns. Therefore it is nearly impossible for harmful bacteria, protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giardia, Vibrio cholerae, and Salmonella typhi (which cause Cholera and Typhoid) to pass through the Sawyer Mini. However, the filter does not remove chemicals, dissolved solids, or viruses.”

Instructions for Cleaning the Water Filter:

The unit comes with a cleaning plunger. Ideally, you want to backwash the filter after each excursion because this will make the device last longer.

Also, you can backflush your filter while you are traveling if needed. Sawyer states that “even with very high particulate/turbid water you should get 5 to 10 gallons through the filter” before needing to backwash.

How Much Do Mini Water Purification Systems Cost?

Lifestraw Portable Water FilterYou can find some portable mini water filters, like the $15 Intey Water Straw that costs a few dollars less than the Sawyer brand. However, it filters significantly less water (396 gallons vs 100,000 gallons).

Sawyer VS Lifestraw: The same goes for the very popular $15 Lifestraw, which filters only 264 gallons. That said, 264 gallons of water may provide more than enough water for you. I mean, that’s a lot of water. =)

The Sawyer Products mini water filter costs about $18-20 for one unit, depending on the color you choose. This is the best-per-gallon I have seen for a compact, portable unit. You can also find them at Walmart for $20 apiece.

Having said that, you can actually lower the price by purchasing a 4-pack (Model SP124). They also sell multi-color 2-packs.
